Real Madrid falls in Piraeus thanks to a 15-0 scoring run from Olympiacos late in the game. The Greeks looked sharp as can be while the Spaniards let a solid first half spiral into a chaotic second. Ioannis Bourousis and newcomer Vassilis Spanoulis led the winners with 16 apiece in the 82-64 victory. Check out why Madrid lost, why Olympiacos pulled away, and three things Freaknick learned from today’s game.
And for those of you who missed it, the highlights:
Matt Nielsen ran the offense of both Rytas and Valencia. He will have a more important role as time goes by.
As for the small forward position of Olympiacos, both Vasilopoulos and Pelekanos are injured. That is the only reason why Papanikolaou is playing at all. Papanikolaou is nothing but a project and a talent at this point. He’s only playing because Pelekanos and Vasilopoulos are out with injuries.
As for Real Madrid, Sergio Rodriguez is a disaster so far this year and with Prigioni injured they are in huge trouble. Because Llull is clearly not a point guard and never has been one. He’s the most trigger happy and shoot first player in Europe. So bizarre how the Houston Rockets GM Daryl Morey GM calls Llull a point guard.
And also, very smart move by Ivkovic to use Papaloukas and Spanoulis as the point guards in offense and to use Teodosic as the shooting guard. Teodosic is way more of a shooting guard than a point guard. He is best at shooting off the ball and passing into the paint. On the other hand Spanoulis is far better as a point guard, where he can penetrate and draw the defense and run the pick and role.
Olympiacos fans kept saying Spanoulis would be the shooting guard and Teodosic the point guard, but thankfully for them Ivkovic knows better and is playing each player to his strength, rather than what the fans want.
