NEWS: According to a report in the New York Post, Ricky Rubio won’t be headed to the Knicks anytime soon. Timberwolves GM David Khan, who decided to draft Rubio 5th in the 2009 NBA Draft, was in NYC to see his team get dismantled 132-105 by the Knicks. The night before, he had dinner with his good friend and President of the Knicks, Donnie Walsh, and told his buddy that he didn’t have the pieces to make a move for Barcelona’s young star: “From the moment we talked, I said to him — and I mean no disrespect to the Knicks or Donnie — what kind of trade can they possibly propose?”
IMPACT: As far as this season is concerned, there is zero impact. None. Ricky is playing a key role on an undefeated Euroleague team that’s first in the ACB. Considering Rubio’s desire to play in a bigger market, however, this news might be of interest going forward, as the Knicks would seem to a nice fit given the team’s playing style under Coach Mike D’Antoni. While they may not have the pieces now, they’ll have oodles of cash to play with this offseason. If they were willing to pay the hefty buyout and compose a sign-and-trade including draft picks or cash considerations, it might be the only likely scenario. Don’t get your hopes up, New York. You should know that by now.
