Seven games in the Turkish League, three more in the EuroChallenge and a couple of EuroCup qualifiers. That’s just 12 official contests and 408 minutes of playing time for Deron Williams with Besiktas Milangaz.
Now, his No. 8 jersey hangs from the rafters in Istanbul. Does he deserve it?
On one hand, Williams averaged 21.5 points and 6.2 assists as Besiktas went a combined 10-2 during his time with the team. Throw in a 50-point game against Göttingen and the shock waves he sent rippling through the hoops world when he signed this deal initially, and you’ve started to build your case.
Now it’s time for the other hand to remind us that his abysmal 6-of-28 performance in his first two games against Dexia Mons kept Besiktas out of the EuroCup, where they would have been in a position to qualify for the Euroleague. And, of course, there’s the only a dozen games argument. It’s also valid.
